New to speech therapy and wondering how appointments work with an SLP? Here we cover how the service works, from setting up appointments to achieving your goals.
The first step is to call and set up an appointment for a quick 15 minute free consultation.
This allows our SLPs to quickly identify needs and learn general information so they can prepare for a future assessment booking.
Next is booking a 60 minute assessment via Zoom, which means you also need a decent quality webcam and microphone. The assessment allows you to meet your SLP virtually and speak in greater detail about relevant communication information. The SLP will use this assessment session to analyze your needs and create goals for you to pursue.
After your assessment, you now know what practical steps you need to take to improve your communication skills or help resolve an issue. These often come in the form of exercises your SLP will give you. Future appointments are made to help you make improvements toward your goal and receive additional practice activities as you progress.
Sounds simple, right? Treatment plans are highly individualized and in most cases are done on a 1-on-1 basis with your SLP. As such, you will not need to worry about awkward group sessions unless it is required. In addition, you will receive a plan that is tailored for you, factoring in your needs and the best ways to achieve your goals.
Please note that your insurance plan can cover your costs of SLP sessions! If you are working, check if your health insurance plan covers speech therapy, as it is a healthcare profession that is in the same category as many other paramedical services like physical therapy! In addition, there are other funding options available including private and government funding or charities.
Are you a student? We have made a convenient table comparing health insurance plans of many Ontario schools. Take advantage of your school insurance plans as they can cover a large amount of expenses for speech therapy!
Ultimately, how fast and how much you improve on your communication skills or resolve issues is dependent on you. If you are willing to put in the time and commitment, speech therapy can help you improve rapidly. Whether it's accent modification, fixing your stuttering, or resolving another communication issue, you can improve on any these matters!
